    About Bagamoyo Town

    Bagamoyo, once a mighty center of trade along the East African Coast,  is a world class Historical site and one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, opulent in cultural remains and ruins just waiting you to explore.

    Bagamoyo is multi ethnical community, with indigenous tribes such are  Wakwere, Wazaramo and Wazigua creating majority of its population. There are also  Arab descent coexist in Bagamoyo, making the town a peaceful and friendly place for visitors from all over the world.

    During German colonial times Bagamoyo was the economic and administrative capital of German East Africa. Since that time, the town has been in decline, with architecture of European origin slowly crumbling, but still pretty impressive to see and explore. We should not fail to mention that Arabic influence on local architecture is also very significant.

    Bagamoyo port was the terminal of slave and ivory caravans travelling on foot all the way from Lake Tanganyika. From here, the slaves and ivory were shipped by dhow to Zanzibar, from where they were dispatched all over the world.

    Activities available in Bagamoyo

    • Bagamoyo stone town tour

      Bagamoyo is enclosed by old buildings, spectacular Arab architecture structured by thick walls of earth and beautifully carved doors made of thick African hardwood. As you walk through narrow streets of stone town, you will visit the German Colonial Administrative block, Art market, Old post office, first Tanzania Primary School, Old Mosques, Hanging tower, Caravan Serai Museum and the fish market. As your walk along the Indian Ocean beach, you will get a chance to visit a centre for dhow sailboat building and enjoy the skills of the local craftsmen.

    • Kaole ruins tour

      Kaole village is one of the oldest communities formed by Arab immigrants oncethey landed on East Africa coast. Inside the village there are ruins dating back to 13th Century, and it is here that Sultan of Oman decided to reside and build administrative and military headquarters. Nowdays, these ruins made of earth and corals, together with the Kaole Museum tell us stories about Ivory trade, movement of traders, cruel slavery and the living culture of present Kaole people originating from Asia. Apart from the ruins, there is an old port surrounded by a Mangrove forest, where you can take a break of all the history and enjoy some fresh air in the nature.

    • Bagamoyo Catholic Church & Museum tour

      This tour gives you opportunity to visit the Old tower of the first Catholic Church in East Africa, one of the Oldest Baobab trees, Cemeteries (Catholic, German and Indian), Dr. Livingstone tower, Old Fathers’ house and the Cross at the beach. You can explore the museum with information about the slave trade, missionaries, life of the people and some collections of artifacts of the indigenous tribes.

    • Crocodile Farm Tour

      Visit to a crocodile farm allows you to learn how these wild predators are kept. You will have a chance to get to know their social behaviors, growth, live capture techniques, feeding/hunting techniques and local uses of various products.

    • Mapopo Island Tour

      Indulge in evening or morning boat tour to Mapopo Island and you will have the opportunity to see thousands of bats that are inhabiting the island, learn about their life and ecological significance of these flying mammals.

    • Ruvu River cruising

      This boat cruise will allow you to explore crocodiles, hippos and various birds living along the Ruvu River that flows from the Uluguru Mountains. You will be able to learn about how locals are fishing, and various ways they use the river water.

    • Fishing with local fishermen Experience

      Spend pleasant couple of hours with a team of experienced village fishermen, with whose help you might catch a fish that will be prepared for your lunch or dinner.

    • Visit Bagamoyo College of Arts

      Locally know as Chuo cha Sanaa, this is an internationally famous arts college in Tanzania, teaching traditional Tanzanian painting, sculpture, drama, dancing and drumming. The college organizes monthly cultural events open to all people to freely participate.

    • Full day & multiple day tours
